Short Film Awards

Videos are an excellent and powerful way of engaging an audience with the story of your research.

In 2015, the PSRS featured a video exhibition as part of the Showcase, giving postgraduates a unique opportunity to present their research in diverse and engaging ways.

Increasingly, videos are being used for academic purposes, and can be used to promote your work on social media such as blogs, Academia.edu, etc. Making your own video is thus something that can help you ‘stand out from the crowd’. The short film competition as part of the Showcase was designed to help familiarise you with the process of designing and producing a video. A description of the video competition when previously held is given below:

Digital Stories

We invite postgraduate researchers to submit short videos of up to three minutes based on the story of their research. The story could be anything from how your research has changed or influenced you, your pathway and how you came to study your current area, or even where you see your research going in the future. It is different to an academic video presentation of your research. You need to consider the narrative of your research journey rather than describing what it is that you study for the whole video.

The 'story of my research' videos are an excellent and rare opportunity for researchers to reflect critically on their own personal stance, and how their journey bears on the outcome of their research overall. You will additionally gain useful skills in communications and media, exploring how to present research to a non-academic audience.

Note: The Short Film competition is not running for PSRS 2020.
