Postgraduate Summer Research Showcase

Common Questions

Q: How long does it take to make a video?
A: It depends and will vary across different projects, but once you have spent an hour or two developing your narrative, the filming and editing process for the initial round could take no more than 6 hours. This can be done over a couple of days, a week, or a fortnight, depending on where you want to obtain footage from.

Q: I don’t have any recording equipment or editing software. How can I make a video?
A: The first round is not about technical or professional quality but about the concept behind the video. Therefore, filming on a phone is entirely adequate. Similarly, there are a number of editing tools freely or cheaply available for both Windows and Mac – for a list to get you started, see here.

Q: What are the restrictions on footage that I can use?
A: There are many copyright restrictions that you must observe in your video. Ensure that you obtain any necessary permissions for images or clips that are essential to your narrative, but in general avoid using restricted material such as film clips, songs, paintings, etc. Make sure that you check before filming yourself on location, i.e. in museums, and do not include anyone in your video who does not give their consent to be on film.
